Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is established.

Founded by George Angell and Emily Appleton, it is located initially at 96 Tremont Street. The first state chapter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the U.S. (est. April 10, 1866), it is created two years after the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals on April 10, 1866. Its founding was prompted by Angell’s letter of protest to the Boston Daily Advertiser after two horses died during a race from Brighton to Worcester in February 1868. The organization soon presses for passage of the state’s first law against animal cruelty. It opens an animal hospital in in 1915.*
